    A word from Sean Disney

JAMBO !  The Barefoot Impi came to me and ADVENTURE DYNAMICS – 8 months ago with this crazy project and I said I would sleep on it.  These mad men and woman want to climb Kilimanjaro with no shoes!  I woke at midnight and said “YES” it can be done but I would have to  adjust the logistics, season and routing to accommodate this band of brave warriors and one “warrioress”!  The rest is history….. GI, Skinny, Wors, Cam, Doc, Dave, Kop, Rich, and Paul – congrats to you all!  I have not seen a well “gelled” team to hit...

Ross talks us through his Kilimanjaro video diary

Day 1 The video looks at the terrain of Day 1, which takes us from 1,800m to 2,600m through a mix of rain forest and savannah. The terrain is small and medium sized stones. Ross describes the strategy for the week.   Day 2 Reports from the camp on Day 2, at Kikelewa Caves at 2,600m. Ross describes the three challenges (temperature, altitude and terrain) faced by the team, and how the very long (almost 9 hours) day provided a stern test and a taste of things to come as the team head towards Mawenzi Peak and then Kibo before...

A visit to the Children’s Hospital – why we go barefoot…

Yesterday we paid a visit to the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital to spend time with the real heroes of Barefoot Kili. It was so nice to see how well some of our little friends in the Burns Unit have healed since our last visit. While Dave, Matt and Ross were interviewed by the News 24 crew, I lay with Sinalo and we finished his maths homework together, what a bright little boy he is! Little Milani has also come along in leaps and bounds, he is such a champion, the real favourite in the ward. He literally rules...

The unknown and the seemingly impossible

The interesting thing about the human condition is that we live and die by various sets of boundaries and paradigms. These are either drilled into us by our parents, taught by our teachers or experienced through the school of hard knocks. So when someone comes along and pitches an idea that overshoots our idea of what is possible we tend to automatically disregard it as crazy or irresponsible – or just plain impossible. All this mental computing happens at a subconscious level, the idea gets filtered through our unique sets of lenses and personal experiences and the solution gets dispatched directly, within...

We may be on the top of Africa, but we feel like we are on top of the world

We have done it!!! At 13h45 today the Old Mutual Barefoot Kilimanjaro Team summited and stood barefoot on the top of Africa. After setting off this morning in sub-zero temperatures, the team realised that today would challenge each and everyone of us. It would be a day that would make any previous day look very ordinary. The gradient and loose volcanic scree continued relentlessly for 4 and a half hours from Kibo Huts (4700m) to Gilman’s point (5681). On the way up we had a couple disheartening encounters with climbers that had failed to summit and were visibly delirious and...

    Cam’s barefoot diary

We arrived early at Mawenzi Camp on day 3, after a strong and stunning climb. It is by far the most beautiful of the camps, nestled in next to a mountain tarn. I seized the opportunity to have my first (pocket) shower in four days (a much appreciated loan from Jo @adventureInc). What a treat to have clean hair and feet! When the banter around the lunch table turned to the increase of Dimox -to-Flatulence ratio, followed by the invention of crushed velvet willy-wiping devices, I decided to retire to my tent for a mini-pedicure. Goodbye French, hello candy pink:)...
